Need it Now! Small Business Series: Happy Habitat

As I begin a huge home makeover project, I’ve been looking for fresh, new brands to include in our new decor. Our main floor screams “2008” and lacks the “home” factor.  When I came across Happy Habitat, I was absolutely amazed at the stunning, modern designs handcrafted by owner, Karrie Kaneda. They are made of recycled cotton and are super soft and cozy.  I knew these were the throws for our home and I invite you to check out Karrie’s story for this week’s Need it Now! Small Business Series feature. You also need to check these out for yourself. There is literally something for everyone. Trying to narrow it down for myself was a struggled since they are all beautiful! Tell me your favorites!

How did the idea of your business come about? How did you get started?

I was looking for a Moroccan patterned throw that didn’t exist, so I thought I’d try to make my own. Then I had a better idea, and thought I’d design it, but have someone else make it since I’m too impatient to make a giant throw, and do it right. Plus, I was unemployed, so I had the mindset of making money somehow— the puzzle pieces just came together.

What does a day at the office like?

Loud music, coffee, social media and if I’m lucky— designing something new. Probably taking photos, editing photos, and lots and lots of emailing. Oh, and really glamours stuff like folding throws, taking out the trash and looking at spreadsheets and metrics.

What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?

Not following anyone else’s rules.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced being a small business owner so far?

Not having anyone to run ideas by. It’s just me here, so not having a team of people to collaborate with is hard. Luckily, I have friends and family I can show things to and get opinions. They’re probably going to start asking for consulting fees as I’m bugging them quite a bit!

What piece of advice would you give others looking to start up their own business?

Stop talking about it and do it. Take a step, then another and just keep doing something every day.

What goals do you have for your business? What can we look forward to in the future from your business?

I’m pretty happy with the way things are, and don’t want to jinx anything, so I’m hoping for more of the same. I’d like to keep selling to small boutiques— I have a goal of getting my throws in every state— I’m at 20, so I have a ways to go. I’d also like to get more international stores.
